Elise Song

Computer Engineering PhD student at University of Wisconsin-Madison, advised by Professor Joshua San Miguel.

Graduated from Cornell University in May 2024 with a Bachelor's in Computer Science.

Since completing my computer science degree, my goal is to delve deeper into the computing stack by specializing in computer architecture during my PhD. With my foundation in the software world, I am making my way down the computing stack to bridge the gap between software and hardware design. Currently, I am exploring how inherent properties of programs and workloads (i.e., approximability, locality, parallelism, and data sparsity) can be leveraged to rethink hardware design. Beyond traditional objectives like performance and throughput, sustainability is an emerging priority.

I enjoy working at intersection of software and hardware, particularly in finding ways for software to compensate for hardware limitations, or vice versa. I have past experience building embedded systems and accelerators, and I am eager to take on new professional and research challenges.

I love to hike and roadtrip with my family 🏜️⛰️, play tennis 🎾, and ski ⛷️. My side passions are art 🎨👩🏻‍🎨, pottery 🍯, and music 🎵.
